Phaplu Maternity Centre is established and operated by HHESS at Phaplu of Salleri VDC in Solukhumbu. It was sponsored by a German INGO named Sherpa–Med Germany in the memory of Pasang Lhamu & Christiane Haase. Equipments were donated from Bill & Melinda Gates’ Foundation and also from personal donations of Mr. Carlos Vejarino, Paris, France.
It is well equipped for providing Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric & Neonatal Care (CEONC). Basic Emergency Obstetric & Neonatal Care (BEONC) is available 24 hrs a day. The number of patients visited in the centre shows that the centre is providing its services to the needy people of the district. According to the number patients visited at the centre in 2009 (Table..), altogether 1232 women visited in which 1003 pregnant women visited for regular health check up, 205 for normal delivery, 7 for cesarean, 7 for still birth and 10 women visited for retained placenta.
Maternity services provided by the Centre are free for all. Those women who come for first & second delivery would get 1500 rupees as transport subsidy from the Ministry of Health. Post Abortion Care (PAC) is also provided for free. Emergency Cesarean Sections are also done for free. Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC) up to twelve weeks of pregnancy is also provided by the trained doctors. This service is provided at a cost of one thousand rupees.
HHESS provided special maternity training to ANM and staff nurses of Phaplu hospital. Two trained ANM and a staff nurse and three maids are working full time at the centre. Doctor’s services are provided from Hospital as a part of their duty.
HHESS built two buildings of two storeys with 9 rooms for the purpose of maternity centre in front space of Phaplu Hospital. The upper floor of the building is utilized for eye and dental clinic. Other rooms at the building are used for maternity services which include labor room, wash room, pre and post delivery room, operation theatre, etc.
The organisation also established audio visual room to conduct awareness programs for pregnant women, room for antenatal check up and also providing family Planning service and vaccination programs.
It has been continuously running since then in collaboration with Solu Hospital, Phaplu.
Maternity Waiting Home (MWH) was established with support from Planned Parenthood West Washington (PPWW), USA and it has been providing free services since 2008 for the pregnant women coming for delivery at the PMC. It is also being used in various health camps organized at the PMC. The MWH programme has been launched in memory of the Late Ms. Suzanne Cluett, an American national, who had visited Solukhumbu district along with senior Bill Gates.
